Left Atrial Appendage: Anatomy, Function, and Importance in Thrombus Formation

نویسندگان

چکیده

The left atrial appendage (LAA) is an extension of the atrium (LA) and has complex anatomical structure unique pathophysiological properties. LAA functions as a decompression chamber during ventricular (LV) systole under increased pressure conditions. Despite previously being considered relatively insignificant portion cardiac anatomy, been highlighted important involved in genesis thrombus formation thromboembolic events. With recent development percutaneous closure devices, morphology assessments have become increasingly important. This article aims to describe anatomy morphology, function assessment parameters, diagnostic challenges, main imaging modalities, particularly transesophageal echocardiography.

Complex left atrial appendage morphology and left atrial appendage thrombus formation in patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), most thrombus forms in the left atrial appendage (LAA). However, the relation of LAA morphology with LAA thrombus is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS We prospectively enrolled 633 consecutive patients who were candidates for catheter ablation for symptomatic drug-resistant AF. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was performed to assess LAA ...

Left atrial appendage function assessment and thrombus identification☆

BACKGROUND The diagnosis of thrombus in the left atrium in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and may be inconsistent because of variability in thrombus morphology. In some cases it is challenging and requires unusual approach. New Doppler-derived methods might be helpful to identify such thrombi. We evaluated quantitative differences in mechanical function of the left atrial app...

The left atrial appendage: anatomy, function, and noninvasive evaluation.

The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a finger-like extension originating from the main body of the left atrium. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinically important cardiac arrhythmia, occurring in approximately 0.4% to 1% of the general population and increasing with age to >8% in those >80 years of age. In the presence of AF thrombus, formation often occurs within the LAA because of...

Left Atrial Appendage Thrombus Despite Anticoagulation.

The American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association task force on practice guidelines recommend therapeutic anticoagulation for at least 3 weeks prior to cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation of 48-hour duration or longer, or when the duration of atrial fibrillation is unknown. This case report demonstrates the presence of thrombi in the left atrial appendage d...

Relationship between left atrial appendage function and left atrial thrombus in patients with nonvalvular chronic atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

The relationship between the left atrial appendage (LAA) function, as assessed by transesophageal echocardiography, and the incidence of left atrial thrombus was evaluated in 62 patients with nonvalvular chronic atrial fibrillation (AF; n=50) and atrial flutter (AFL; n=12). It was hypothesized that in both AF and AFL not only the LAA flow velocity (LAAFV), but also the frequency of the LAA move...
